In this opera, Mimi meets Rodolfo. Both are desperately poor, and Mimi is slowly being consumed by a deadly illness (tuberculosis). They fall in love, and together struggle against their poverty. Finally they lose both struggles, and Rodolfo is helpless to prevent Mimi's death in the final act.
This great opera cries out against social injustice. (It is interesting to compare the message of this opera to the superficiality of most modern films.)
