Dear Members,

I personally believe that Scientology is a very dangerous cult.

To support this contention, I would ask that you view the following:

Scientology now has recruiting offices throughout North America and Europe. Thus it is important that we become better informed about the true intent of this dangerous cult.

LET'S COMPARE THE CULT OF SCIENTOLOGY WITH ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS
It is very informative to compare the worst mental health "treatment" (the cult of Scientology), to one of the best (Alcoholics Anonymous).
Law-Breaking
  • Alcoholics Anonymous:

Alcoholics Anonymous is known world-wide as an extremely law-abiding, nonprofit organization.

  • The cult of Scientology:

Scientology has been found guilty of serious crimes dating back to 1978 ( http://www.scientology-lies.com/crimesindex.html ).

The most bizarre crime involved Scientology's attempts in the early 1970s to infiltrate the Internal Revenue Service by placing Scientology spies in that service. In 1977, Mary Sue Hubbard (the wife of Scientology's founder) and ten other Scientology executives were found guilty of theft, burglary, and conspiracy and served jail time. Mary Sue Hubbard was sentenced to serve four years in Federal Correctional Institute, Lexington, KY. ( http://www.scientology-lies.com/people/executives/mary-sue-hubbard.html )

Recently, Scientology was found guilty of fraud in France, and barely escaped being banned from operating in France ( http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8327569.stm ).
Financial Extortion
  • Alcoholics Anonymous:

Alcoholics Anonymous is a nonprofit organization that offers its services for free. AA members pass a basket at each meeting for donations to pay for the coffee and rent. The average donation is $2 per member per meeting. AA members are never asked for any other money.

  • The cult of Scientology:

Courts have found Scientology to be repeatedly guilty of coercing its members to pay large amounts of money for its bogus "therapy". Scientology members routinely are charged hundreds of thousands of dollars for Scientology counseling.
Totalitarian Rule
  • Alcoholics Anonymous:

Alcoholics Anonymous is a leaderless organization; every AA group democratically makes their own decisions. Representatives from every AA group meet to democratically make administrative decisions for their geographic area. Representatives from the different AA areas meet once a year to vote on administrative matters at the AA regional headquarters. All the budgets for the different levels of administrative operation are published for every AA member to view.

  • The cult of Scientology:

Scientology is a totalitarian organization controlled by one man, David Miscavige. The total dictatorial rule of David Miscavige is detailed in an excellent interview with Larry Brennan, an ex-Scientologist and former high-ranking lawyer for Scientology ( http://www.lermanet.com/audio/larry-brennan.htm ). In this interview, Larry Brennan stated:

"(David Miscavige) controls you know, an empire, financial empire worth certainly at least, hundreds of millions of dollars if not billions. He completely controls it as a dictator..."

Scientology has its own penal system in which dissenting Scientologists are often held against their will. Larry Brennan stated:

"(Regarding David Miscavige becoming the leader of Scientology): ..more scientologists were declared, beaten and abused and sent to penal camps in that one year under Miscavige than the total of the fifteen years under the Guardian's Office Worldwide.

(Interviewer): OK, we should qualify that. Now you said penal camps. What are you specifically referring to?

(Larry Brennan): Primarily what's called the Rehabilitation Project Forces and that's something that Hubbard created and Miscavige used a lot and people would be sent to these, where they would be housed for the most part with - there are so many stories on the Internet that people can read of people who have escaped them or left them for one reason or another, and they're telling their stories. But for the most part people lived in squalor, they worked unbelievable hours. They got very little sleep. They were indoctrinated all the time. They had to run around, they were spit upon and in cases where they were up by Miscavige. And it was just a horrible hell."

In this interview, Larry Brennen stated that the budgets for Scientology and its many front organizations are purposely hidden from public view. The corporate structure of Scientology was purposely designed, according to Larry Brennen, so that the millions given to Ron Hubbard and David Miscavige could not be traced to them.
Ideology
  • Alcoholics Anonymous:

Alcoholics Anonymous believes that its members became powerless over alcohol, and as a result their lives became unmanageable.

The treatment in Alcoholics Anonymous consists of regular attendance at AA meetings for support, and living by the 12-Step spiritual program (which involves not drinking, asking for God's help, and helping others harmed by alcoholism).

  • The cult of Scientology:

Scientology believes that all mental illness is caused by being possessed by the spirits of dead space aliens (Thetans) exiled to earth 75 million years ago by the galactic supreme leader, Xenu ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7EEOMbBIO8 ).

Scientologists believe that Xenu initially froze these space aliens, and shipped them to earth to be deposited in volcanoes. Xenu then exploded hydrogen bombs over these volcanoes to kill these space aliens. Then the spirits of these dead space aliens were collected by Xenu and brainwashed. Finally, Xenu freed the spirits of these space aliens to infect mankind and cause all the mental illnesses that we have today.

Scientologists believe that the only treatment for mental illness is to rid the body of possession by these dead space aliens. The only way to do this is to take hundreds of thousands of dollars of Scientology "counseling".

Scientologists also believe that psychiatrists are responsible for all the evil currently in the world, and that psychiatrists caused the halocaust. Thus Scientologists aim literally to rid the world of all psychiatrists. (Hitler hated Jews, and David Miscavige hates psychiatrists. It seems that dictators have to create paranoia and hatred in order to consolidate their totalitarian rule.)
Outcomes
  • Alcoholics Anonymous:

Alcoholics Anonymous has hundreds of thousands of regular members world-wide, and has scientifically been shown to benefit the majority of its regularly attending members.

  • The cult of Scientology:

Scientology has less than 50,000 regular members, and has not been scientifically proven to be an effective treatment for any mental illness.

In fact, many experts now regard Scientology as the most harmful of all cults. You only have to google "Scientology" to see the many personal stories of former members harmed by Scientology.

ABC NIGHTLINE INTERVIEWS THE LEADER OF SCIENTOLOGY

This interview went so badly for David Miscavige, the head of Scientology, that he subsequently refused to be re-interviewed on television.

During this interview, David Miscavige specifically lied that he didn't financially benefit from leading Scientology. He then went on to lie that psychiatrists planned, in 1955, to send mental health patients to a "Siberia-like" penal colony in Alaska. This was totally untrue. Then David Miscavige falsely accused the Food and Drug Administration of murdering the head of Scientology in Seattle.

Scientology Training Routines

HERE ARE EXAMPLES OF ACTUAL SCIENTOLOGY TRAINING ROUTINES

Scientologists spend hundreds or thousands of hours doing these obedience training exercises.

Like training a dog, these training exercises are aimed at teaching the Scientologist to happily respond to the commands of his/her master.

More Scientology Training Methods

HERE ARE MORE EXAMPLES OF ACTUAL SCIENTOLOGY TRAINING ROUTINES
Scientology uses many obedience training techniques that are used by the military.

One military technique involves having new recruits stay motionless at attention for long periods of time. In Scientology, this is done by having new recruits sit at attention without blinking for long periods of time.

In the military, new recruits are routinely yelled at by their officers to teach them to obey orders. Officers are also trained to yell at their men in order to increase the officer's own self-confidence.

In Scientology, new recruits are taught to yell to "be forceful" and to intimidate others. Likewise, new Scientologists are yelled at by their Scientology superiors, to reinforce their obedience to Scientology.

These Scientology training exercises teach new recruits not to think for themselves. Instead, these training exercises teach new Scientology recruits to obey their trainers in order to "progress" to the next level of training.

I use exactly the same obedience training techniques to condition my dog.

Scientology Leader Outlines Plan To Destroy Psychiatry

HOW SCIENTOLOGY DIFFERS FROM MY PSYCHIATRIC PRACTICE

What Is The First Visit To A Typical Psychiatrist Like?
In our discussion about Scientology, I think it would be useful to compare a first visit to a psychiatrist vs. a first visit to Scientology.

Let's start with a description of a first visit to a psychiatrist.

After initial introductions are completed, the first question every psychiatrists asks is "how can I help you?"

The psychiatrist then tries to focus on the patient's "Chief Complaint" (the most important problem). A history is then taken which clarifies when this chief complaint started, what could have triggered it, what made this problem worse, what made this problem better, and what treatments or interventions have already been tried for this problem. The psychiatrist then asks the patient to clarify his/her life goals, and specifically his/her goals for therapy (i.e., what he/she hopes therapy will accomplish).

The psychiatrist repeats the above enquiry for other, important problems in the patient's life.

After this, the psychiatrist systematically enquires about the patient's medical history, occupational history, social history (childhood, schooling, marriage, parenting, friendships etc.), and family history (especially family medical and psychiatric history).

Since psychiatrists are medical doctors, the psychiatrist will also systematically ask about the patient's current physical health (i.e., a "Review of Systems") and current medications. If a patient is being admitted to hospital, the psychiatrist will also do a complete physical exam. However, in outpatient practice, the psychiatrist usually does only a very abbreviated physical examination (blood pressure, pulse, weight, and screening neurological exam if needed).

Usually, at the end of the first visit, the psychiatrist will tell the new patient what is the provisional diagnosis (e.g., "I think you are suffering from a depression"), brief explanation of the diagnosis (e.g., "Depression is the most common cause of disability in your age group."), and a proposed plan of action (e.g., counseling with/without medication).

It is not uncommon for a psychiatrist to tell a new patient that they have recovered sufficiently (while waiting for the psychiatric referral) so that they no longer need to be seen by a psychiatrist.
My Psychiatric Practice
My psychiatric practice is identical to that of other psychiatrists except I add a few additional features.

Before every visit, I ask my patient to fill out a "Quality of Life" questionnaire in my waiting room ( http://www.mentalhealth.com/qol/IMHQOLScale_1.pdf ).

During our interview, I use this questionnaire to identify the important problems in my patient's life, and to monitor the changes in my patient's life since the last visit.

Also, during our interview, I type computerized progress notes, and make a computerized psychiatric diagnosis. I often give a summary copy of my progress note and computerized diagnosis to my patients after their visit. The print out of the psychiatric diagnosis includes a detailed description of the illness. In this way, I hope to educate my new patients as to their psychiatric diagnosis and treatment.

My interviewing room has no desk; instead it looks exactly like a relaxed living room with 3 sofas and an armchair where I sit. I always offer coffee to my patients at the beginning of our visits. My patients tell me that our visits are warm and respectful, and frequently humorous. Each visit lasts approximately one hour, is problem-oriented, and ends with specific treatment goals for the next month.

Since I am a Canadian psychiatrist operating under socialized medicine; my patients do not have to pay for their psychiatric treatment. Patients earning less than $24,000 per year receive their psychiatric medications for free.
First Visit To Scientology
On the first visit to Scientology, the new recruit is never told that Scientology is a cult, that its members have to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to clear themselves of the spirits of dead space aliens in order to be cured, or that Scientology jails its dissident members in penal camps.

Instead, Scientology tells its new recruits that it is a "church" whose only aim is to help others.

During the first (sales) visit to Scientology, the new recruit is given a psychological questionnaire. This questionnaire always identifies that the recruit has significant personal problems that require Scientology treatments.

The new recruit is then signed up for an expensive course of training exercises (that turn out to be virtually endless and very expensive).

Soon into their training, new Scientologists are told that psychiatrists are the cause for much of the evil in the world. This marks the beginning of the new recruit's hate indoctrination.

This documentary identifies how new recruits to Scientology are pressured to work for Scientology and to pay for endless counseling courses. Scientologists also teach that they do not believe in medical treatments for even physical disorders.
