I think only a small proportion of those would harbour life, (maybe O.0001%) but that would still mean billions of inhabited worlds.
I believe that E.T. life is extremely unlikely to be humanoid, I think it would look weird, maybe like squid or octipuses, or sponges or fungi.

My 2 cents:
A very challenging questions for many no doubt. I’ve always remained open about such things; so much so that the continuing discoveries that keep coming have made me question EVERYTHING!
I fear not enough expense is given to the quest of exploring our universe, as many of its benefits in doing so are feared rather than sort to benefit mankind’s evolution. Mans perspective is quite limited when it comes to accepting the existence of anything other than himself and further complicated with an image hang up. God have mercy if we ever find another planet like Earth.
Forgive me as I shed a little perspective on myself there. I gave up the notion of a God as is my right to do, or so I tell myself. Your question brings an air of hope for me, as to think there might be something other than, humans or perhaps even a similar species somewhere out there that has not squandered the rock on which they reside … would give some kind of relief to an otherwise biggest waste of space and or opportunity in such an endless expanse.
I don’t know, but I do hope there is something else out there. As strong as my dislike for dogma, and as open as I now am, I do often question the likelyhood for so many variables to make up for not only the so called Zone, but also the Mass, elements and neighboring gravitational influences. I’m no expert and have a failing memory, but love listening to Astronomy FM as well as many other science podcast on questions just at the one posed in this thread.
From what I have gathered … Other than the obvious Gazillion stars to galaxies numbers equations and or explanation, that there is in fact a lot more to it. I believe most people not that interested would go as far to include maybe the Goldilocks Zone as a variable … but then as I mentioned there is also the Type of Star … to which both its size, mass and elemental make up will have a huge bearing on what type of rocks orbit around it. Add to this the necessity of a rotating Iorn core and the type and size of magnetosphere Vs Solar wind as well as umpteen other things. I mean … just thinking about the right conditions even when being in an area of the universe with the right levels of hydrogen, dust and all else to fall in and begin the mixing process for a protoplanetary disk to form around a young developing star is boggling as we are still only just learning how this swirl impact on the creation of various planets to be. The trajectories and required impacts just astound the mind to think of how many things can be … But alas … the biggest surprise to me, is that it would seem from the podcasts that I listen to, that more and more scientists are beginning to calculate just such numbers that have proven their sums to be right … or that as I understands it that similar predictions can be simulated and it’s in that … that I believe very much that whilst so many conditions are required for complex life to evolve, that Yes … it’s more than possible that other life exist … that is more probable and likely that it does … which poses even more perplexing questions somewhat sculptured by where each of us stands on this rock, both geographically and socially.
I guess the thing is, the more and more scientist find out how it all mixes ... that they are actually finding some planets that are the right mass, have the elements and are situated just right for the space and everything else that resides near by that matters ... so much so they need new detectors now to give the same benefits of our current orbiting science satellites here above earth. The leaps and bounds made in the last 20 years alone are staggering ... with regard to xplanets... (among other things/cosmic quests) I do wish for more manned missions ... but that's just me.
I for one, hope that there is, and if god forbid they look like us, I hope to hell it’s with pointy ears and philosophy to match … No Meds Required. Live long & prosper. Prosper in equality for "ALL".

Hi Dstress,
The most convincing proof of extraterrestrial life is the existence of UFOs.
The most convincing proof of UFOs, for me, was the UFO sighting in 2008 just 3 blocks away from where my daughter lives in Victoria, BC. My daughter unfortunately wasn't in Victoria that day, but the UFO was videoed by (a slightly intoxicated) group of people on a sailboat in the harbor.
This UFO sighting is one of the best on YouTube. Knowing our local drinking customs; this video looks very authentic (even to the emotional reaction and swearing). Enjoy!

Hello Dr Long.
Whilst I am very skeptical about the large number of conspiracy like tales that abound, I do not discount the idea of ET’s and the possibility of some kind of presence either in the past, present and or future. Certainly an interesting topic.
Interesting picture. |

THERE ARE AT LEAST 100 BILLION GALAXIES IN THE UNIVERSE
We obviously aren't alone, but extraterrestrials must think we are too primitive to converse with them. Bummer. |
