WARNING: "SUICIDE FOREST IN JAPAN" IS A FRANK DISCUSSION OF SUICIDE AND SHOWS PICTURES OF CORPSES

Dear Members:
This short video documentary describes, in a compassionate manner, the very real problem of suicide in Japan. In particular, it explores how Japanese have now chosen one forest in which to commit suicide.

In Japan, there is a very disturbing increase in "suicide manuals" which give road maps to this forest. The more the Japanese publicize suicide (in the media or on the internet); the more popular suicide has become.

It has gotten so bad that Japanese media now has informally banned publishing news of suicides since there have been clear examples of "copy-cat suicides".

Traditionally, suicide was uncommon in Japan, and limited only to the samurai and to the terminally ill elderly. Thus the current epidemic of youthful suicides in Japan is without historical precedent.

In that this video documentary is a very sensitive exploration of this important topic; I believe that it can be posted on our website. However, given the pictures of actual corpses, I don't think this video is suitable for all our members.

As a psychiatrist, I believe that the summary statements made at the end of this documentary are very true. Namely, that most people committing suicide are very ambivalent about whether they should take their life, and commit suicide as an impulsive act. Those that survive their suicide attempt quickly realize that they don't want to die. They incorrectly believed that no one cared.

Depression is a time-limited condition which invariably cures itself. Thus it is a tragedy for a depressed person to commit suicide; since the vast majority of depressed individuals recover in a few months.

Overall, I found this documentary to be a very gentle and thoughtful discussion of a very serious Japanese mental health problem.
