Can you die of a broken heart?
Greg Foot... Science broadcaster... In collaboration with Dr Dana Dawson Consultant cardiologist
Anyone who’s been heartbroken understands it can hurt like crazy, and I’m someone who knows all about it.
Research has shown that people who suffer the pain of losing a loved one can experience similar physical pain as someone touching a hot probe!
As a scientist I want to know what heartbreak actually looks like in my body. I'd also like to understand why it feels like real physical pain and if people can really die from a broken heart.

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.

I believe you can.
When my father passed away and I lost my relationship and my mother fell ill, my heart problems got worse than before. Angina, tachycardia then bradycardia then arrhythmia all the time for 3 months after my dad's passing. I missed him so much that I couldn't breathe. I didn't want to live without him.
I'm hoping that my heart won't break like that again...literally. It's not a good place. My cardiologist said that I was experiencing broken heart syndrome (which made my mvp worse) |

PS., I say what I do for I never suffered from depression as I do now culminating from a heart attack experienced twenty years ago on the 25th of this very month.
What I am getting at is, that I firmly believe, the heart and mind are very much in tandem with each other.

I believe you can die of a broken heart or at least the stress of losing a loved one can cause health problems that can result in death.
Look at all the older couples that you hear about that one died and shortly after the spouse died.
I believe this to be true with animals as well.
I had 2 parakeets that were very close to each other and after the female passed it was only 2 months and then the male passed. He was so depressed after she died and all he did was sit and shiver in the perch. |
