Yes they did. And they could experience such a challenge in the future from asteroids to a new virus or a drastic environmental change. There is no absolute certainty Not that I worry about the end of the world everyday, I am confident life on earth will endure for a long time, just not sure humans will, but I sure hope so. If that happened I don't care which human survive, whatever race or nation, as you said if we dwindled down to a mere 10,000 everyone on earth however different we look all colors, shapes and sizes, we have exactly the same genes. Differences in race are merely superficial.

And we're doing a hell of a good job eradicating life as we know it with global warming being the big picture. We are the cause and the cure.

I totally agree with Vegan. I think we humans have fouled our nest and will continue to pay for it with global warming, extinction of precious species, violent weather, rising seas, water and food shortages, and these blasted unending wars being crammed down our throats. Sometimes I think that the world would be much better off without humans screwing everything up. There are several recent books and documentaries describing the process after humans are wiped off the earth.

Maybe this is my depression speaking, but mainly it is my mind and the observations over my lifetime.
