I'm a big fan of learning new words, so I thought I'd start this new thread so people could post new, or interesting words they've learned. Even words from another language are fine.

Fantastic idea Sopater!
Word of the Week--"oleaginous" Definition--1) containing oil; oily. 2) unctuous; exaggerated insincerity. Discussion--Olive oil is a blessing to cooks; it has many healthful properties and provides many of the same cooking properties as other less desirable oils and fats. Still, in general, oil tends to have negative connotations as we can see in this week's word oleaginous, which carries in meaning none of the good characteristics of the olive oil for which it is named and all the slimy characteristics that are conjured up by an oily, unctuous person. So while an oleaginous sauce might be hard on your stomach, an oleaginous person is sure to be hard on your psyche.
Etymology--Oleaginous was borrowed from the Latin oleaginus or of the olive, with olea being Latin for olive. The Latin olive root can be seen in the following languages also.
Foreign Translations German: olartig Dutch: olieachtig French: oléagineux (-euse) Italian: oleaginoso Spanish: oleaginoso http://www.allwords.com/
The truth is incontrovertible; malice may attack it, ignorance my deride it, but in the end, there it is." Winston Churchill

oleaginous = unctuous: characterized by excessive piousness or moralistic fervor, esp. in an affected manner; excessively smooth, suave, or smug. Great word CBoo!
This ones a painful one:

Cryptozoology (from Greek êñõðôüò, kryptos, "hidden" + zoology; literally, "study of hidden animals") refers to the search for animals which are considered to be legendary or otherwise nonexistent by mainstream biology. This includes looking for living examples of animals which are extinct, such as dinosaurs; animals whose existence lacks physical support but which appear in myths, legends, or are reported, such as Bigfoot and Chupacabra; and wild animals dramatically outside of their normal geographic ranges, such as phantom cats or "ABC"s (an acronym commonly used by cryptozoologists that stands for Alien Big Cats).
The animals studied are often referred to as cryptids, a term coined by John Wall in 1983.
Cryptozoology in definition is the study of unidentifed animals not yet cataloged in any field of zoology. From bigfoot to lake monsters this field seems to perplex thousands yet be lashed out at by well acredited scientists and bright minds.
Some possible cryptids:
Chupacabra, big foot, loch ness monster, mothman, thunderbird, kelpie, sasquatch, griffin.

Dermatillomania
Similar to trichotillomania. Instead of hair pulling it is compulsive skin picking. It is a disorder that I have. It is a body-focused repetitive behavior that results in the destruction of one's own skin. The face is usually the main target of skin picking, (for me, my legs get the most attention and abuse but lately I have picked at a whisker and now have a huge sore there) but Compulsive Skin Picking may involve any part of the body. Skin picking is a form of self-mutilation that can be quite serious, as people who suffer from CSP may experience bleeding, bruises, infections, scarring or even permanent damage to the skin. The behavior is often unconscious, and people with this compulsion may have difficulty stopping because they are often unaware of their actions. Compulsive Skin Picking is also called dermatillomania. It is classified by psychiatrists as an impulse control disorder. 1/4 of those with OCD are estimated to have this disorder. As are 1/4 of those with body dysmorphic disorder.
If you want to learn more about it click here: http://www.brainphysics.com/skin-picking.php
Nothing has helped me to stop. I have gotten so bad that my legs are filled with scars now. I can't wear skirts or shorts, let alone a swimsuit (I love to swim and miss it!) I would say for me it got out of control about 1&1/2 to 2 years ago. It's like I just don't give a crap anymore! Too much stress and loss in my life.
