Very interesting Stigs. I wish they can find the exact causes of all these mental disorders. Once they do there will be better treatments a available. I hope I'm alive to see it. |

Hi Stigmastomper,
The "research" on the parasite, Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii), causing schizophrenia is an example of really, really bad research. Basically, these researchers found that a very common parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, was found in one-fifth of all individuals with schizophrenia. They also found that this parasite was found in one-fifth of the general population. They then erroneously concluded that, if this parasite was eradicated, it would cure one-fifth of all those with schizophrenia. There is absolutely no scientific support for this leap in logic. In science, just because A and B occur simultaneously; there is no proof that A causes B or visa versa. So just because a common parasite occurs in 20% of individuals with schizophrenia and in 20% of the general population; doesn't prove that this parasite causes schizophrenia. There are literally thousands of different bacteria, viruses and parasites that occur in the human body. Just because these organisms are found in the bodies of individuals with schizophrenia doesn't prove that any or these organisms cause schizophrenia. If any parasite/virus/bacteria caused schizophrenia, you would expect: (1) Individuals with schizophrenia would have more of these organisms than would the general population. (2) Inoculation of these organisms into a healthy individual should cause schizophrenia. (3) Eradication of these organisms from people with schizophrenia should decrease their psychosis. (4) Prevention of entry of these organisms into people's bodies should prevent them from developing schizophrenia. (5) Inoculation of brain tissue with these organisms should produce some form of cellular damage that we find in schizophrenia. None of these 5 conditions has been shown with this parasite; so there simply isn't a scientific basis for this proposal that this parasite causes schizophrenia. Phil Long MD Administrator
